I just watched former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Isbae U’s Curiosity Made Me Ask show. I saw snippets online and knew this was one episode I had to watch. Confession: up till now, I had never considered Isbae U’s show as worthy of my time. I didn’t know a day like this would come and I would sit in front of a screen grinning from ear to ear watching Isbae U.

OBJ is a delight anytime. However, the way he blended into the show and played along with the host is the height of adaptability. To say that was really refreshing is to say the least. OBJ’s sense of humour is simply amazing. Watching the show looked like a grandfather engaging in banters with his grandson. It was entertaining and also educative. In particular,  I love the way the episode ended- with Isbae U prostrating and Obasanjo hugging him. I have watched several interviews of Obasanjo but nothing quite like this. Nothing serious but yet shows another side of the man I consider the greatest Nigerian alive.

Friendships can cross generations. When we value the relationships our parents built, we may discover doors, wisdom and connections that can enrich our own lives. Share on X

What I consider the greatest part of the episode however is where Obasanjo spoke about Charly Boy and his relationship with his father,  the late Justice Oputa. Obasanjo and Charly Boy’s dad were friends. It was when the old man ailed and OBJ came to check on him in Charly Boy’s house that he started developing a relationship with Charly Boy also.

I saw OBJ at the launch of Charly Boy’s book a few weeks back. Obasanjo personally signed letters inviting people to Charly Boy’s book launch and I wondered then what would make the respected former President get so much invested in the book launch. Now, I understand better. It was Charly Boy leveraging on that relationship that opened the door for Isbae U to interview OBJ.

I remember clearly what the Bible said in Proverbs 27 verse 10a, “Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not”… There is power in inheriting your parent’s friendship. Friendships can be inherited just like material resources. If one’s parents have good friends, do your best to also latch on to the relationship. Nurture and cultivate them like it’s yours.

Some relationships are bigger than one generation. What our parents built can become a bridge connecting us to people, opportunities and experiences we may never have encountered on our own. Share on X

Now, I understand better when my dad visited his friends and he took me along. Friendships can be cross-generational. Obasanjo and Charly Boy just proved that.

Well done, Isbae U. I’ve subscribed to your channel now.
